Kanika Coffee & Eatery
Tangerang, 2025

Redesigning a Shophouse Café into a Cultural Social Hub.

In the heart of a vibrant commercial block of shophouses, Kanika Coffee & Eatery stands poised to evolve from a charming Peranakan café into a landmark social space — one that invites both longtime friends and curious newcomers to linger, connect, and savor authentic tastes from heritage cuisine.

Kanika is more than a place to eat — it’s a cultural rendezvous. Its identity is rooted in nostalgia, genuine conversation, and culinary craftsmanship. The design vision centers on crafting an environment where comfort, cultural expression, and everyday social rituals converge.

The brief calls for a space that:

  • Promotes dine-in social interaction, especially for middle-aged groups seeking relaxed conversation.

  • Welcomes youthful explorers eager to experience Peranakan gastronomy and local coffee culture.

  • States its presence boldly within a row of homogenous shophouses, drawing attention without sacrificing integrity.

The redesigned interior will transition away from purely transactional dining into a layered social ecosystem:

1. Warm Communal Seating:
Seating zones calibrated for conversation — from cozy banquettes for flexible smaller groups to long communal tables — encourage sharing meals, memories, and stories over dishes like rich bihun kari or aromatic kopi tarik.

2. Heritage Meets Comfort:
Reinterpreting Peranakan design motifs — intricate tile patterns, subtle woven textures, and curated ceramics — through a contemporary lens. Warm natural materials such as timber and woven rattan pair with soft lighting to evoke both familiarity and sophistication. These elements honor cultural roots while supporting relaxed, prolonged stays.

3. Spatial Flexibility:
Varied spatial zones transition fluidly — from open, social seating near the façade to more intimate enclaves deeper in the interior. Retractable partitions or moveable screens allow the space to host gatherings, small events, or casual meetups while retaining its core café identity.

Facade as Beacon

In a cluster of visual uniformity, the Kanika façade must be distinctive yet refined. The new façade design will act as a visual invitation — balancing presence with hospitality:

  • Legacy signage inspired by Peranakan typography with subtle modern accents.

  • Textural contrasts between timeless ceramic patterns and sleek, contemporary surfaces.

  • A well-lit frontage at night to extend the café’s welcoming warmth beyond daylight hours and into evening gatherings.

This architectural narrative allows Kanika to stand out without overpowering the rhythm of the street.

The core design strategy is cultural storytelling. Each design gesture — from a custom banjar mosaic behind the bar, to crafted coffee stations that celebrate ritual — connects guests to the narrative of shared heritage. This makes every visit a sensory experience: rich in flavor, memory, and conversation.
